Mekong River

Last Updated: July 13,2020

The main stream of the Mekong River is 4180 kilometers long. It is the tenth longest river in the world and originates in Zaduo County, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, China. It flows through Yunnan Province of China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, flows into the South Sea from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and is the most important transnational water system in Asia.

The upper Mekong River is in China, and it is called the Lancang River; the lower delta is in Vietnam. Because Vietnam has 9 estuaries when it flows out of the South Sea, Vietnam calls it the Jiulong River, with a total length of 2139 kilometers.

The Mekong Delta has no congested traffic and no magnificent buildings. What you can have here is the experience of walking back and forth on this Mekong River. Moreover, the natural environment protection here is very good, and the protection of the delta terrain is very rare. You can take a bamboo raft to row slowly in the depths of the river covered by the dense forest. The fun is endless, the natural scenery on both sides is beautiful, or you can take a motor boat to enjoy on the water.

Can Tho City, Vietnam, 170 kilometers away from Ho Chi Minh City, is the last section of the Mekong River, and the most beautiful section of the Mekong River. The waterways here are also the busiest, with various ships sailing constantly. The most famous tourist attraction here is the floating market, named "Cai Lang" Market.

Mekong River

This market belongs to the morning market, and the trading starts at dawn. There are a lot of cargo ships here every day to trade local specialties. It seems that there are special products throughout the Mekong River basin in Vietnam. The place is lively as soon as daylight begins. The big ship is standing still, waiting for the buyer to sail, and the small boat shuttles back and forth, looking for buyers who could not be judged.

Unlike the tourist-based floating market in Thailand, the floating market in Vietnam's Mekong River is mainly based on bulk trade, or wholesale, where fruits, vegetables, and food are traded here. Many large ships are parked in the middle, which makes it convenient for buyers to approach all sides. A large area of water is full of commercial ships from all over the country, and there are many types of ships, some are very old, making people worry about how far they can go.

Can Tho is a big city. Many tourists will come here and ride various trading tools. Some of them want to buy something. Some people want to see what is in the ancient merchant ship here. Everything here is full of curiosity.

These boats at the Mekong River floating market are constantly moving between big ships and cruise ships, looking for buyers, shouting with a smile, forming a unique landscape on the Mekong River. If you are interested, you can also experience the local lifestyle on the Mekong River by boat.
