Phi Phi islands A visit to Phuket would not be complete without a visit to Phi Phi Islands, Regarded as one of the most beautiful islands in the world, stunning scenery. Beautiful beaches and bays including the famous Maya Bay where the movie The Beach was filmed, a paradise for snorkeling and swimming.
Phi Phi Island is a collection of six Islands located on the West coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. With clear-crystal waters, white sand, and lush tropical vegetation, Maya Bay gathers all the postcard clichés in one place.
The Phi Phi islands are an archipelago of 6 islands, with the 2 main islands being Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. Just a 45-minute speedboat trip or a 90-minute ferryboat ride from either Phuket or Krabi, these picture postcard islands are excellent tropical getaways in Southeast Asia.
Phi Phi has pristine beaches, stunning rock formations, and vivid turquoise waters teeming with colourful marine life. The larger and inhabited Phi Phi Don attracts hundreds of travellers to its lovely shores, while the smaller uninhabited Phi Phi Leh has beautiful bays and beaches, including the iconic Maya Bay.
Our list of top things to see and do in Phi Phi below features the most popular sites the island have to offer. The natural beauty of the area is second to none and provides a great choice of tours and activities – you're easily spoilt for choice on things to do in Phi Phi.
Phi Phi Viewpoint is one of the most popular landmarks on Koh Phi Phi Don. This such a large island has an unique shape – like an 'H' – with its main village built on the horizontal bar, a 100-metre flat strip of sand between Dalum Bay to the north and Tonsai Bay to the south.
Bamboo Island ('Koh Phai' in Thai) is one of the 6 islands belonging to the Phi Phi archipelago in the southern Thai province of Krabi. Approximately 5 km northeast of Koh Phi Phi Don, it's a tropical dream come true.
Viking Cave is one of the most popular sites on Koh Phi Phi Leh, located at the bottom of a tall limestone cliff on the north-eastern side of the island. It takes roughly 30 minutes to get there by long-tail boat from Tonsai Bay (the main pier in Phi Phi Islands).
Diving is one of the prime activities in Phi Phi. The island counts a large number of serious and professional PADI dive centres dispensing courses – from Discover Scuba Diving to Divemaster – and day trips to the many world-class dive sites available in and around Phi Phi's waters.
Shark watching is a popular activity for nature-loving visitors to Phi Phi Island. The most popular spot for this tour is off the eastern end of Long Beach, a few hundred metres from the shore. It's known as Phi Phi Small Shark Point (there's another Shark Point off the west coast of Phi Phi Don Island, which is only accessible by scuba diving).
Moo Dee Bay ('Loh Moo Dee' in Thai) has a 500-metre-long white sand beach that offers pleasant snorkelling opportunities, mostly at both ends. Situated on the east coast of Koh Phi Phi Don, it's an excellent escape from the crowd.
Krabi is a prominent rock-climbing spot in southern Thailand, thanks to its tall limestone cliffs which are also natural landmarks of the province. It offers top-ranking sites such as Tonsai Beach and Diamond Cave in Railay, and all along its coast. Phi Phi Don may lie 42 km off the Krabi coast, but it has the same topography.
Captain Bob's Sailing Booze Cruise is how partygoers and groups can enjoy a fun day of discovering beautiful sites of the Phi Phi islands. Even if it sounds boozy, it's undoubtedly exhilarating. The cruise typically departs at 1pm from Tonsai Bay, stopping by Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, Loh Samah, Wang Long Cove, and Pi-Leh Bay. It also offers opportunities for snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, cliff jumping, and monkey feeding.
Pum's Thai Cooking School is one of the most notable places to learn all the secret techniques and ingredients of Thai cuisine. Its main restaurant/school is located in Patong Beach, with a second branch in Tonsai Village on Koh Phi Phi Don (its third branch is in Chiang Mai).
There are 3 main areas: Tonsai Village (the main urban centre), Tonsai East, and Loh Dalum Bay. Most bars go for 1 of 2 contrasting approaches – a laidback vibe or a pumping party atmosphere. However, some bars, as you'll see below, succeed in wrapping both ambiences up in 1 venue.
Phi Phi Reggae Bar:Phi Phi Reggae Bar is one of the longest-established night spots in Tonsai Village. Located right between Tonsai and Loh Dalum bays, it's a large venue with loud music, sports events shown on a sizeable screen, 5 bars fronted by friendly bartenders, pool tables, and even a Thai boxing ring.
Sunflower Beach Bar:Sunflower Beach Bar is at the northern end of Loh Dalum Bay, right on the beach. Salas, hammocks, and mats are set around a bamboo-and-thatch building, offering a pure hippie-era spirit. The bar also offers an expansive view of the bay, making it a great sundowner spot in Phi Phi.
Carlito's Bar:Carlito's Bar is a electronic music nightclub located towards the eastern end of Tonsai Bay. Occupying 2 buildings – 1 on each side of the path – it's just the right place to party to reggae and house, provided by Thai and international DJs.
Ibiza Beach Club:Ibiza Beach Club at Ibiza House Phi Phi is a discotheque with a dancefloor right on the beach. with affordable drinks and live performances to enjoy until the end of the night. While drinking you can have a wonderful view of stunning fire shows. You can dance to modern and trendy tunes.Pool parties take place as well usually on weekends or holidays.
Banana Bar:Banana Bar occupies the rooftop of Sombrero Mexican Restaurant in Tonsai Village. A wonky spiral staircase leads you to the bar – it's a good idea to sober up before making your way back down.
Stockholm Syndrome:Stockholm Syndrome is a great venue in the nightspots corner of Tonsai Village in Koh Phi Phi. It occupies a 2-storey building, with most of the action happening on its ground level. That includes beer pong tables, pool tables and a small dancefloor. The second floor is a comfortable lounge, attracting those who prefer a quiet night out. The atmosphere at Stockholm Syndrome is really festive, with very friendly staff and management to keep you entertained until late.
