Chongqing is referred to as "Mountain City", with building and roads at the slope of the mountain. Chongqing is one of the best destinations in China and knows about the ancient town and local cultures. Chongqing attracts domestic and foreign visitors for its cultural heritage and tourist attractions. Its geographical feature is uneven and the buildings there are distributed intriguingly. In Chongqing, there are many karst caves, hot springs and streams. Spend your time in Chongqing; you will never forget this Chinese city brimming with history and beauty.

The best places to visit in Chongqing

Ancient Town Ciqikou

Ancient Town Ciqikou as an ancient city that built during the Ming and Qing dynasties is now a tourist attraction that located outside the centre of Chongqing and an hour's drive to get there. The Ciqikou is well known for its temples, tea houses and historical relics. Today, this ancient city has 12 streets in total and two of them, the main streets are busy tourist routes, which have been adopted by all kinds of shops, tea houses and snack stalls, etc.. The shops sell porcelain, other handicrafts, and gifts; all this became the great urban agglomeration that it is today. In the centre of the ancient area, there is a Buddhist temple with more than 1,500 years that extends to both sides of the mountain.

Museum of the Three Gorges

This museum is located directly opposite Chongqing Municipality and is a monographic museum that also tries ring the awareness of preservation and study of cultural relics and the environment of the Chongqing area and the Three Gorges. Researching and educating, that is their motto. On an architectural level, it is a building with a brick exterior and a transparent dome. Inside we find bronze sculptures, objects representing the culture of the area, the project of the river dam and its origins and an "ecological corridor" 1km long. This museum can occupy about 42,497 km2 and consists of the main exhibition hall and other buildings. This museum comprises four basic exhibits:

  • The Three Glorious Gorges reflects the cultural and historical spirit of the area.

  • The Old Ba-Yu that tells us about the origin and development of Chongqing.

  • The Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945) that recalls the sorrows of the Chinese in the area.

  • A special exhibition dedicated to the changes the city underwent during the turbulent twentieth century.

Concerning the exhibits, we can see porcelains of various dynasties, sculptures of the Han dynasty, paintings and calligraphies through time, coins, clothes typical of the people of the southwest of the country and cultural relics. Also, there is a 180° panoramic image of the war around Chongqing that describes the city when it was the provisional capital of China, and a 360° image of the Three Gorges before the construction of the large dam.

Sculptures of Dazu

The stone sculptures of Baoding Shan in Dazu combine elements of Confucianism, Taoism and Hindu Tantric Buddhism and constitute a unique example of a harmonious synthesis of philosophies and religions. There are naturalistic representations of daily life, of monumental and even surrealist style, with guardian gods with fangs and buddhas in full nirvana, surrounded by references to Buddhist parables in reliefs with vignettes. The use of reds, blues and greens stand out.

Monument to the Liberation

Liberation Monument, Chongqing's commercial and entertainment centre, originally made of wood and dedicated to Sun Yat-sen, was rebuilt in 1945 to celebrate the end of the war with Japan. The monument is within walking distance of all the major hotels and shops in Chongqing.

Great Hall of the People

This building with a capacity for 4,200 spectators was erected in 1954 as a conference hall to commemorate the vital role played by Chongqing during the war. It is inspired by Beijing's Temple of Heaven and is now part of the Renmin Hotel. The imposing exterior, with three eaves traversed by columns of red pillars under a blue cover, stands out among the modern skyscrapers.

Gele Mountain Forest Park 

Gele Mountain is another fantastic location of Chongqing. This happens to be the first south-west China and is a well know fishing location in Chongqing. Chongqing was once the second capital of chain in a few years ago, and Zhazi Cave Prison is one of the favourite locations. The favourite food of the inhabitant of Gele Mountain is Spicy Chicken.

Chongqing hotpot- Local cuisine

This is one of the wells know in southwestern China. This place has more than 50,000 hotpot eateries with a world-class meal. You can have a combination of spice and soup from Chinese mushrooms and lotus root. 

Best time to visit

You can visit Chongqing during spring and autumn. The weather at this time is very friendly.  From October to April, is the best time to experience the night view in Chongqing. The winter is the best time for the museum visitors. The perfect time to enjoy a hot spring bath is also during winter.

How long should I stay in Chongqing

You should probably stay for a day or more to experience the amazing view of Chongqing. You can even dedicate a full day to visit Dazu Stone Carving or 2 Wulong Karst Landscape which is one of the top world heritage sites.
