Catherine, a retired teacher from Melbourne, had been planning a trip with her daughter for over a year. With her daughter finishing her studies, they wanted one trip together before she started work.

Thailand and Vietnam drew them — both have deep history, strong traditions, and landscapes that change from north to south. Fifteen days seemed enough to see both without rushing.

What they wanted was simple: someone to handle getting them from place to place, a plan that made sense, and room to explore. Catherine liked taking her time at historical sites, reading the background, asking questions. Her daughter was more into everyday life — markets, street food, neighborhoods where people actually live. The plan needed to work for both.

Planning the Journey

Fifteen days across two countries means a lot of moving parts — flights, hotel changes, getting from city to city. Catherine also wanted the pace to suit both of them: enough planned to make each stop worth it, but not so packed they'd be worn out halfway through.

Amber from UME Travel helped them put it together. She arranged cars and drivers at each stop, booked the flights, and found guides for the bigger sites. She also left free time built in, so Catherine could linger while her daughter ducked into a nearby market.

Bangkok and Hanoi had more packed into each day. Chiang Mai and the cruise were lighter.

The Trip

Bangkok

Bangkok was their first stop. UME's team met them at the airport.

Arriving from Melbourne's winter into 35-degree heat took some adjusting. Amber had kept the first day light — an evening tuk-tuk ride through the flower market instead of a full day out.

They visited the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha Temple, where Catherine talked with the guide about Thai royal traditions. Her daughter was more interested in the street food nearby. A day trip to Ayutthaya took them to ancient ruins from Thailand's former capital, with a guide who explained what they were seeing.

Chiang Mai

After Bangkok, Chiang Mai felt smaller and slower — mountains, temples, and walkable streets.

At Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, a guide explained how northern traditions differ from central ones. At Warorot Market, Catherine's daughter picked out dried mango and local tea to bring home, chatting with vendors through the guide. Catherine found a handwoven scarf at a textile stall.

With fewer set plans, they could walk at their own pace and still have the afternoon free.

Vietnam: Hanoi → Halong Bay → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City

They flew to Hanoi on Day 8. UME's teams in both countries handled the booking, airport pickups, and guides.

Hanoi

They visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Temple of Literature, and Hoa Lo Prison Museum, each covering a different era. A guide walked them through — this mattered most at Hoa Lo, where the displays are packed with dates and events. Catherine liked being able to ask questions and get straight answers.

Halong Bay

After five days in cities, they boarded a 2-day cruise. Most of the time was open. On the first morning, they had breakfast on deck while the boat moved slowly between limestone formations — both called it a highlight.

Hoi An

Hoi An was quieter than the cities. They explored the Japanese Covered Bridge and old town, then joined a lantern workshop. They each built a lantern from scratch — bending bamboo, choosing fabric, assembling it with help from a local artisan. Catherine's daughter picked bold colors; Catherine went traditional. They packed both for home.

Ho Chi Minh City

Their last stop. At the Cu Chi Tunnels, a guide showed them the underground network — how it was built, how people lived inside it, what it was used for. Afterward they walked the city's markets before flying home.

Travel Result

By the end, both felt the trip had worked. They'd seen a lot without feeling rushed, and the arrangements — flights, cars, guides — were handled throughout.

A few things made the difference. The busy days in Bangkok and Hanoi were followed by lighter ones in Chiang Mai and on the cruise, so neither burned out. The free time let them spend an afternoon apart without losing the plan. And the hands-on moments — building lanterns in Hoi An, the scarf in Chiang Mai — were what they kept talking about.
