Linda, from Melbourne, had been to Japan once on a work trip that left no time to look around. She thought Japan would suit her mother, who was turning eighty that spring. Her mother had never traveled overseas. She liked gardens, slow walks, and temples. Cherry blossom season seemed to fit.
The concern was pace. Her mother walked slowly and needed to sit often. Group tours online packed five or six stops into a day. Linda wanted something at her mother's speed.
How the Trip Came Together
Linda spoke with UME Travel: eight days, three cities, no more than four hotel check-ins, and time to rest each day. Her mother would not climb steep paths or walk more than two hours at a stretch.
The route kept distances short. Three nights in Tokyo, a day trip to Lake Kawaguchiko to see Mount Fuji without moving hotels, then two nights each in Kyoto and Osaka. Train transfers were under three hours with reserved seats. Linda asked for a guide on select days in Tokyo and Kyoto, a driver for the Mount Fuji trip, and open time for the rest.
Tokyo: Cherry Blossoms, Gardens & An Easy Start
They landed at Haneda in the late afternoon. The first full day started at Ueno Park, where cherry trees along the central path were in full bloom. Her mother walked beneath the branches, stopping often. The paths were flat and wide, with benches every few hundred metres.
In the afternoon they took a sightseeing boat along the Sumida River. Cherry trees lined both banks, and from the deck her mother could see the blossoms without walking.
The next morning they visited Senso-ji. Linda had asked for an early slot, before crowds. They arrived just after opening, when the Kaminarimon gate and the market street were still quiet. The five-story pagoda stood above the rooftops, and incense smoke drifted from a bronze burner in the courtyard. They walked through slowly and had lunch at a soba shop nearby.
Their last stop in Tokyo was Chidorigafuchi, where cherry trees form a canopy over the moat path beside the Imperial Palace. The dark water reflected the pink blossoms above. They sat on a bench watching rowboats pass underneath, petals drifting onto the surface.
Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko: A Slow Day with a Clear View
On the fourth day, a driver picked them up. They went to Oshino Hakkai first — a village where clear spring ponds are fed by Mount Fuji's snowmelt. The water was transparent to the bottom, with trout drifting over white stones. Her mother sat by the largest pond watching the fish for a long time.
From there they drove to Lake Kawaguchiko and boarded the sightseeing boat. Mount Fuji rose above the far shore — the full snow-capped cone clear against the sky. Linda took photos while her mother watched the mountain shift angle as they moved.
Kyoto: Traditional Experiences at Her Own Pace
They took the Shinkansen to Kyoto the next morning. Her mother handled the two-hour ride without trouble.
In Kyoto they did a kimono and tea ceremony together. A studio helped them dress — her mother in pale blue with a silver obi, Linda in a darker shade. They sat on cushions in a tatami room while a teacher walked them through preparing matcha: whisking the green powder in a stone bowl, turning it twice before drinking. Her mother held it with both hands and drank slowly. Linda took a photo of her on the tatami in the kimono, and later said it was the one picture she would frame at home.
The following morning they went to Fushimi Inari. The path of red torii gates begins gently but grows steeper as it climbs the mountainside. Her mother made it through the first section, where the gates stand close together and the light filters through in narrow bands of red and shadow. After about fifteen minutes, the steps became uneven. She stopped. Linda stayed with her while other visitors continued upward. They stood together in the quiet of the gate-lined path, then turned back. They had seen the part that mattered.
Nara and Osaka: Deer, Temples & A Gentle Finish
On the way to Osaka, they stopped in Nara. The deer in Nara Park wander freely and approach visitors. Linda bought deer crackers, and her mother held one out. A small deer took it gently from her hand. She laughed — a short, surprised sound — and Linda handed her another. They also walked through Uji Matcha Street, where shops sold matcha soft serve, mochi, and powder in small tins. They bought one to take home.
In Osaka they visited Osaka Castle, where an elevator inside meant her mother did not have to climb the stairs. The city spread out beneath wide windows.
They also went to Shitennoji, one of the oldest temples in Japan. The grounds are flat and open, with a quiet five-story pagoda at the centre. The only sound was a bell ringing at fixed intervals.
That evening they went to Dotonbori. The canal was lit with oversized neon — a giant crab, a running man, a dragon. Her mother was tired but wanted to see it. They walked one block, had okonomiyaki at a counter restaurant, and headed back.
On their last morning they went to Kema Sakuranomiya Park, where cherry trees line the river for nearly a kilometre. Petals drifted onto the water and collected in small drifts against the riverbank. Her mother stopped near a bridge to watch them moving on the current. It was quiet there, even with the city just beyond the trees.
Looking Back
Linda said the trip worked because the days were full but never pushed. Her mother had a rest every afternoon, and the longest single walk was under an hour. One train transfer and one day with a driver kept the logistics simple.
The photo from the tea ceremony sits on her mother's sideboard now. Linda is thinking about where to go next spring.
