THE FAMILY

Susan, in her mid-fifties, lives in Manchester and works as a school administrator. She planned the trip and handled the early conversations with UME Travel.

She was travelling with her son, who had recently moved back to the UK after spending three years in Australia, and her daughter, who had completed graduate school the previous summer.

It was the first time the three of them had travelled together since her son moved abroad. Susan had previously visited Thailand on a work trip and had always wanted to return with her family.

This time, she wanted something different: a trip where they could enjoy experiences together while still having enough flexibility for everyone to explore at their own pace.

WHY THAILAND

The idea of visiting Thailand started with Susan’s daughter, who had been hoping to visit for several years.

Her son was less focused on specific activities. He mainly wanted some time near the ocean at the end of the trip. Susan wanted a destination that would work for three adults with different interests.

Thailand felt like the right choice because it offered a combination of cultural sites, mountain landscapes, local experiences, and beautiful beaches without requiring too much travel between regions.

WHAT THEY NEEDED

Susan had travelled on an organized tour in Thailand years earlier and remembered the early mornings, fixed schedules, and limited free time.

For this trip, she wanted something more relaxed.

Her priorities were:

  • Enough time to explore Bangkok without rushing

  • A slower-paced experience in northern Thailand

  • Cultural activities that everyone could enjoy

  • Time at the beach at the end of the journey

  • No forced shopping stops

  • Flexibility for three adults travelling together

During the first conversation, Susan explained:

“We wanted a trip where everyone could enjoy their own interests without anyone feeling like they were waiting for the others.”

HOW THE TRIP CAME TOGETHER

Phobe, the UME Travel consultant who designed the journey, first spoke with Susan about the family’s different travel styles and expectations.

The challenge was creating a route that balanced cultural exploration, nature, and relaxation without making the itinerary feel rushed.

Instead of adding too many destinations, Phobe suggested focusing on three regions:

  • Bangkok for history, temples, and local life

  • Chiang Mai for mountains, traditions, and nature

  • Phuket for a relaxing island ending

The final itinerary included three nights in Bangkok, four nights in Chiang Mai, and one night in Phuket, with private transportation and local support throughout the journey.

Phobe also built flexibility into the schedule, allowing the family to slow down when needed rather than following a packed timetable every day.

BANGKOK:Three Days Exploring Thailand’s Cultural Heart

Their Bangkok experience focused on the city’s historic areas and everyday local life.

The family visited the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, where they learned about Thailand’s royal history and Buddhist traditions. Having a private guide helped them understand the meaning behind the architecture instead of simply visiting the sights.

The afternoon heat was stronger than Susan remembered from her previous visit. Rather than continuing with a busy schedule, the family adjusted their plans and enjoyed some free time.

While Susan relaxed at the hotel, her son and daughter explored the local flower market. It became one of their favorite unplanned moments from Bangkok.

Another highlight was their visit to the floating market and Maeklong Railway Market. The family enjoyed seeing a different side of Bangkok beyond the main attractions, from local food stalls to traditional markets.

CHIANG MAI:Slowing Down Among Mountains and Local Traditions

After Bangkok, the family travelled north to Chiang Mai, where the pace became much slower.

They visited Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai’s most important temples, located on a mountain overlooking the city. The experience gave them a chance to learn more about northern Thailand’s culture while enjoying views over the surrounding area.

The family also spent time at an ethical elephant sanctuary outside Chiang Mai.

For Susan’s daughter, this became one of the most memorable parts of the trip. She had always wanted to experience seeing elephants in a responsible environment, and being able to feed and interact with them made the visit feel personal and meaningful.

They also explored local markets and historic temples, including Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang. These slower-paced days allowed the family to experience Chiang Mai beyond the typical sightseeing route.

PHUKET:Ending the Journey by the Sea

The final part of the trip was designed to give everyone time to relax.

After flying to Phuket, the family enjoyed a quieter beach setting. Everyone spent the afternoon differently: Susan relaxed, her son spent time by the water, and her daughter enjoyed the hotel facilities.

The highlight of Phuket was their sunset catamaran experience in Phang Nga Bay.

Cruising between the limestone islands gave the family a chance to simply enjoy being together after a week of exploring.

For Susan, this was exactly the kind of ending she had hoped for: a shared experience without a strict schedule.

AFTER THE TRIP

After returning home, Susan shared that the biggest difference was having the freedom to enjoy the journey at their own pace.

The family appreciated that the itinerary allowed them to spend meaningful time together while still giving each person space when they needed it.

The elephant sanctuary was the experience Susan’s daughter mentioned most often when friends asked about the trip. The sunset cruise in Phuket became the family photo they continued sharing afterward.

Susan and her children have already started discussing their next family adventure, with Vietnam now on their list.
