Japan Tours in May: Private Trips for Green Japan & the Alps

May opens up a different kind of Japan. Once Golden Week ends, fresh-green Kyoto, the Japanese Alps, mountain snow corridors, spring festivals, and comfortable outdoor weather take center stage. Our May trips are designed around these seasonal opportunities.

Is May a Good Time to Visit Japan?

May works especially well for travelers who want Japan in spring without making cherry blossoms the entire focus of the trip.

By May, Kyoto's maples have turned bright green, mountain routes are reopening, wisteria and shibazakura are still in season, and the heavy heat and humidity of summer have not arrived.

There is one important exception: Golden Week.

Early May is one of Japan's busiest domestic travel periods. Once the national holidays finish, the month feels very different. JNTO specifically notes that the latter half of May is calmer and falls before the main rainy season reaches much of Japan.

May at a Glance: Early May Vs. Mid-May Vs. Late May

Travel DatesWhat May Feels LikeBest Reasons to Go
May 1–5Golden Week, busy transport, festival atmosphereHakata Dontaku, Children's Day, late Hokkaido sakura
May 6–20Comfortable weather, fresh greenery, major cultural eventsKyoto gardens, wisteria, Tateyama Snow Corridor, Tokyo sumo
May 21–31Warmer days, long daylight, greener mountain landscapesKamikochi, Japanese Alps, cycling, gardens

For most first-time visitors, the period after Golden Week offers the easiest balance of weather, sightseeing, and seasonal experiences.

Weather in Japan in May (Temperature in Japan in May)

Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and most of Honshu are usually still ahead of the rainy season, although southern Kyushu may begin entering tsuyu toward the end of May. Okinawa typically enters its rainy season much earlier, around mid-May.

DestinationAvg. HighAvg. LowMay Conditions
Tokyo23.6°C / 74°F14.6°C / 58°FWarm days, comfortable evenings
Kyoto25.1°C / 77°F14.5°C / 58°FWarm afternoons, cooler mornings
Osaka24.9°C / 77°F16.0°C / 61°FMild to warm spring weather
Fukuoka24.4°C / 76°F16.1°C / 61°FWarm, increasingly humid later in May
Sendai20.2°C / 68°F11.7°C / 53°FCooler spring conditions
Sapporo17.9°C / 64°F9.0°C / 48°FCool, especially mornings and evenings
Okinawa (Naha)27.0°C / 81°F22.1°C / 72°FWarm, humid, and increasingly rainy

Three Things to Know About May Weather

  • The main rainy season usually has not reached central Japan yet. Kanto, Kansai, and much of Honshu typically enter tsuyu in June, making May useful for travelers planning outdoor sightseeing.

  • Okinawa is different. Its rainy season begins around May 10 on average, so weather flexibility becomes more important for southern island trips.

  • May is not rain-free. Tokyo averages about 140 mm of precipitation in May, while Kyoto averages about 151 mm. A compact umbrella is still useful.

What to Wear in Japan in May

Packing is fairly straightforward if you're staying in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and similar lowland cities.

For most sightseeing days:

  • T-shirts or lightweight tops

  • Light trousers, jeans, skirts, or dresses

  • Cardigan, overshirt, or light jacket

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat

  • Compact umbrella

You will need different clothing if the itinerary goes higher or farther north:

  • Hokkaido: Bring a fleece or warmer jacket, especially in early May.

  • Kamikochi: A warm layer is useful for cold mornings and changing mountain weather.

  • Tateyama Kurobe: Treat this as a high-altitude snow environment, not as an ordinary May sightseeing day. Bring warm layers, a weather-resistant outer layer, and suitable shoes.

  • Okinawa: Lightweight and quick-drying clothing becomes more useful as the rainy season approaches.

Cherry Blossoms & Spring Flowers in Japan in May

May is not simply "Japan after the cherry blossoms."

The pink Somei Yoshino season is over across most of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, but spring is still moving through northern Japan, mountain landscapes are changing quickly, and several other flowers take over.

Can we see cherry blossom in May in Japan?

Yes, but head north. JNTO notes that sakura can continue in Hokkaido and northern Tohoku into mid-May.

Depending on the year, look toward:

  • Hakodate

  • Matsumae

  • Sapporo

  • Colder parts of eastern and northern Hokkaido

  • Selected areas of northern Tohoku

For a May trip centered on cherry blossoms, Hokkaido makes far more sense than Tokyo or Kyoto.

Best Places to Visit in Japan in May

May brings fresh greenery, alpine snow, major festivals, and some of the year's most comfortable outdoor weather. These destinations show the month at its best.

Kyoto: Fresh Green Temples & Gardens

After sakura season, Kyoto turns vivid green. Maple leaves fill temple gardens, moss deepens in color, and walking weather is usually comfortable.

Highlights:

  • Tofuku-ji and Nanzen-ji for green maples

  • Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari

  • Tea experiences and traditional gardens

  • Aoi Matsuri on May 15

Tateyama Kurobe: Snow Walls in Spring

May is an excellent time for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

While lower elevations are already deep into spring, the high mountains still hold massive snow walls along the Snow Corridor. The route also combines naturally with Matsumoto, Toyama, Kanazawa, or Takayama.

Kamikochi: Green Valleys & Snow-Capped Peaks

Kamikochi offers one of May's strongest seasonal contrasts: fresh green valleys beneath snowy mountains.

Kappa Bridge and Taisho Pond are easy sightseeing highlights, while higher mountain trails may still have snow and require more preparation.

Tokyo: Sumo, Festivals & Spring Culture

By May, Tokyo shifts from sakura to cultural events and outdoor sightseeing. Don't miss:

  • Grand Sumo Tournament, May 9–23, 2027

  • Sanja Matsuri

  • Kanda Matsuri

  • Gardens, markets, food tours, and neighborhood walks

For travelers interested in Japanese culture rather than flowers alone, May is a particularly rewarding time to visit.

Hokkaido: Japan's Late Spring

Early May can still bring cherry blossoms around Hakodate, Matsumae, and Sapporo.

Later in the month, Hokkaido is better for cool spring weather, seafood, green parks, and relaxed city sightseeing.

Nikko & Hakone: Forests, Waterfalls & Onsen

Nikko works well for green forests, waterfalls, shrines, and cooler mountain air.

Hakone combines onsen, lake scenery, and Fuji-area views, making it an easy nature break between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Seto Inland Sea: Art, Islands & Cycling

May's mild weather suits Naoshima, island hopping, and the Shimanami Kaido especially well.

Expect coastal scenery, contemporary art, ferry travel, and comfortable cycling before summer heat and humidity build.

Best Things to Do in Japan in May

May rewards travelers who spend more time outdoors. Don't miss these experiences in May when planning your trip.

  • Walk Through Kyoto's Green Maple Gardens

See famous foliage temples during the aomomiji season, when Japanese maple leaves are bright green rather than red.

  • Cross the Tateyama Snow Corridor

Travel through one of Japan's most dramatic spring mountain landscapes, with snow walls still lining sections of the Alpine Route.

  • Experience Kamikochi in Spring

Walk the valley beneath snow-capped mountains while fresh greenery and spring flowers return to the lower elevations.

  • Watch Grand Sumo in Tokyo

The 2027 May Tournament runs from May 9–23 at Ryogoku Kokugikan, making May especially attractive for travelers interested in traditional Japanese sports.

  • Cycle the Shimanami Kaido

Ride between islands across the Seto Inland Sea before the heat and humidity of summer arrive.

  • Experience Shincha Season

May is first-harvest tea season in many tea-producing areas. Visit Uji, Shizuoka, or Kyushu for tea experiences centered around fresh shincha.

  • See Koinobori for Children's Day

Colorful carp streamers appear around Japan for Children's Day on May 5, with larger displays stretching across rivers and public spaces.

  • Enjoy Spring Onsen

Mountain ryokan and open-air baths remain appealing in May, especially in cooler areas where evenings are still mild or crisp.

Festivals & Events in Japan in May 2027

May moves quickly from Golden Week celebrations into some of Tokyo and Kyoto's biggest cultural events.

EventLocationTimingWhy It Matters
Hakata DontakuFukuokaMay 3–4Massive Golden Week parade and performances
Children's DayNationwideMay 5Koinobori and family traditions
Grand Sumo TournamentTokyoMay 9–23, 2027One of Tokyo's three annual tournaments
Aoi MatsuriKyotoMay 15Historic court procession in Heian-period dress
Sanja MatsuriAsakusa, TokyoThird weekend of MayMikoshi processions and intense festival atmosphere
Kanda MatsuriTokyoMay, major festival in odd-numbered yearsOne of Tokyo's major traditional festivals
Mifune MatsuriKyotoThird Sunday of MayHeian-era boat procession on the Oi River in Arashiyama

Hakata Dontaku is held every year on May 3–4, while Sanja Matsuri takes place on the third weekend of May.

2027 is also an odd-numbered year, when Kanda Matsuri traditionally holds its larger-scale festival program.

Golden Week: The Part of May You Need to Plan Around

Golden Week is not a reason to automatically avoid Japan. It is a reason to build the itinerary differently.

During the early-May holiday period, expect stronger demand for:

  • Shinkansen and other long-distance transport

  • Resort and onsen hotels

  • Theme parks

  • Famous sightseeing areas

  • Domestic flights

If You Travel During Golden Week

A few changes make a big difference:

  • Stay two or three nights in the same base instead of changing hotels constantly.

  • Reserve popular transportation as early as booking allows.

  • Avoid using peak holiday dates for unnecessary long-distance transfers.

  • Visit major attractions earlier in the day.

  • Book theme parks and high-demand experiences ahead.

  • Consider festival-focused destinations such as Fukuoka rather than trying to avoid every crowd.

The holiday period is also when events such as Hakata Dontaku make early May worth considering despite the crowds. JNTO describes Golden Week as one of Japan's busiest travel periods.

What to Eat in Japan in May

May food is less about one famous dish and more about the transition from spring into early summer.

Seasonal FoodWhat to Look For
ShinchaFresh first-harvest green tea from Uji, Shizuoka, and Kyushu
Kashiwa mochiOak-leaf-wrapped rice cakes associated with Children’s Day
ChimakiAnother traditional May 5 sweet, especially common in western Japan
SoramameFresh broad beans, often grilled or served simply
Hatsu-gatsuoEarly-season bonito, often lightly seared
Hotaru ikaFirefly squid from Toyama, still in season during May
TakenokoBamboo shoots finishing their spring season early in the month

For travelers taking the Alpine Route, Toyama gives this food section extra relevance. Seasonal seafood can become part of the route rather than a separate food experience.

Best Japan Itineraries for May

Rather than choosing a route simply because you are traveling in early, middle, or late May, match the itinerary to what you want May to add to the trip.

Classic Japan After Golden Week | 10 Days

Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto → Nara → Osaka

A strong first trip after the main holiday rush.

What May adds:

  • Fresh-green Kyoto

  • Comfortable city walking

  • Hakone onsen and mountain scenery

  • Tokyo sumo or festivals when dates align

  • Less dependence on one short blossom window

A typical split could be:

  • Tokyo: 3 days

  • Hakone: 1 day

  • Kyoto: 4 days

  • Nara: day trip

  • Osaka: 1–2 days

Japanese Alps & Snow Walls | 12 Days

Tokyo → Matsumoto → Tateyama Kurobe → Toyama → Kanazawa → Takayama → Kyoto

This is the route that most clearly says "May."

You move from spring cities into deep alpine snow, then back into green mountain towns and temple gardens.

Highlights:

  • Matsumoto Castle

  • Tateyama Snow Corridor

  • Toyama seafood

  • Kenroku-en in Kanazawa

  • Takayama's old town

  • Kyoto in fresh greenery

Hokkaido Late Spring | 10 Days

Tokyo → Hakodate → Matsumae → Sapporo → Otaru

Best suited to travelers interested in late sakura or a cooler version of Japan in May.

Why choose it:

  • Chance of early-May blossoms

  • Hakodate and Matsumae seasonal scenery

  • Hokkaido seafood

  • Cooler temperatures

  • A route very different from the standard Golden Route

Exact sakura timing varies, so flower viewing should remain flexible rather than being tied to one predicted date.

FAQs About Japan Tours in May

  • Is Japan Crowded in May?

Early May can be very busy because of Golden Week, with heavier crowds at major attractions and strong demand for trains and hotels. After Golden Week, crowds generally ease, making mid-to-late May more comfortable for sightseeing.

  • Is May Expensive in Japan?

Golden Week can be expensive, especially for hotels, ryokan, and domestic transportation. Prices and availability usually improve after the holiday period, and mid-to-late May can offer better value than peak cherry blossom season in April.

  • Is There Snow in Japan in May?

Yes, but mainly in high-altitude and northern areas. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka will not normally have snow, while places such as the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and higher parts of the Japanese Alps can still have deep snow.

  • Can You Ski in Japan in May?

Yes, but options are limited. Some high-altitude and Hokkaido ski resorts continue operating into early May when snow conditions allow. Expect spring skiing rather than the powder conditions of January and February.

  • Does It Rain a Lot in Japan in May?

May has occasional rain, but Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and much of Honshu usually do not enter the main rainy season until June. Okinawa is different, with its rainy season typically beginning around mid-May.

  • Are There Cherry Blossoms in Japan in May?

Yes, mainly in northern Japan. Cherry blossoms can still appear in Hokkaido and parts of northern Tohoku in early or even mid-May, depending on the year. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka have normally finished their main sakura season by then.

May is made for travelers who want more than cherry blossoms. Think fresh-green Kyoto, alpine snow walls, spring festivals, and comfortable days outdoors. Start Planning My May Japan Trip →
