October weather in Japan: region by region
October doesn't mean the same thing across Japan. Sapporo is in full autumn. Naha is still summer. And Tokyo, on paper, is the wettest month of the year.
That last one catches people out. According to Japan Meteorological Agency 1991–2020 normals, Tokyo averages 234.8 mm of rain in October, more than in June (167.8 mm) and more than double November's 96.3 mm. It doesn't rain daily — about 10.5 days — and it dries as the month runs: 102.9 mm in the first ten days, 70.6 mm in the second, 61.3 mm in the third.

Three things those numbers mean in practice:
Kyoto swings about nine degrees between a 23°C afternoon and a 14°C dawn, which is why an 8 a.m. temple visit feels colder than the photos suggest.
Elevation beats latitude here. Nikko town averages 14.1°C in October while Oku-Nikko, an hour further up, averages 9.6°C, colder than Sapporo six hundred kilometres north.
The second half is drier. Tokyo's sunshine hours climb from 37.1 to 51.4 across the month's ten-day blocks, so flexible dates should start after the 15th.

What to wear in Japan in October
Pack layers, not bulk. City days are shirt-sleeve weather, evenings drop to around 14°C, and anywhere above 1,000 metres needs a real jacket. One waterproof shell earns its space in the first half of the month.

Three details people forget. The gap between afternoon and evening is seven to nine degrees in every mainland city, so what you wear to dinner isn't what you wore to lunch. You'll take your shoes off constantly — temple interiors, ryokan, some restaurant rooms — so slip-on shoes and thick socks beat anything that needs lacing. And Tokyo's October rain arrives in short heavy bursts rather than drizzle, which is why a shell with a hood works better than a folding umbrella.
My first October in Kyoto, I brought one heavy coat and sweated through every temple visit, then froze at dinner. Layers fixed it, and I haven't packed a winter coat for October since.

The mistake I see most often is five bases in ten days. October rewards two slow regions and one city, not a checklist — the colour front moves, and you want room to move with it. Three ways to combine them are in the October itineraries below.
Where to see autumn leaves in Japan in October
Yes, you can see autumn colour in October — just not in Kyoto or Tokyo. The koyo front moves south and downhill, so October belongs to Hokkaido, Tohoku, the Japanese Alps and high-altitude Nikko. In an average year, Kyoto and Tokyo don't turn until late November.

Here's the part most October guides skip. Japan Meteorological Corporation's first 2026 forecast, published 2 September, puts Kyoto's reference maple at 11 December and Tokyo's at 29 November, both normal to slightly late. If your dates are locked to Kyoto, October gives you quiet temple mornings and comfortable weather, not red maples. Both are good trips. Eleven lacquered yatai roll out for the 9–10 October festival, but the version most visitors miss is the evening procession on the 9th, when the lanterns are lit, and the daytime crowd has gone. Between festival days, the Yatai Kaikan hall keeps four of the floats on display.
Walk Tsumago to Magome on the Nakasendo
Roughly 8 km of cobbled and forested path between two preserved post towns, with luggage forwarded ahead so you carry only a daypack. [Couples]
Soak outdoors after dark
October brings the first evenings of the year when an open-air bath is comfortable rather than a novelty. Hakone and Fuji Kawaguchiko both work as two-night stops between Tokyo and Kyoto. [Senior-friendly]
Get into Kyoto's gardens at opening time
You won't get maples, but you will get the moss gardens and the large temple complexes almost to yourself for the first hour of the day.

Tokyo Disneyland, DisneySea and Universal Studios Japan all run Halloween programming through October, and Ikebukuro hosts a large street costume gathering on the last weekend.
What to eat in Japan in October
October is Japan's harvest month, and the seasonal menu turns over almost completely. Look for:
Matsutake: pine mushroom, grilled or in a clear broth. Expensive and worth it once.
Sanma: Pacific saury, grilled with salt and grated daikon. Peak season is short.
Shinmai: the year's new rice, noticeably sweeter than rice stored over summer.
Kuri: chestnuts, in everything from rice to Mont Blanc pastries.
Kaki: persimmons, crisp or soft depending on the variety.
Hiyaoroshi: autumn sake released after summer maturation. Brewery towns like Saijo in Hiroshima pour it from October.

October crowds and Japanese holidays: when to book
October isn't shoulder season anymore. JNTO counted 3,896,300 international arrivals in October 2025, up 17.6% year on year and the highest October on record. It's busy, just less busy than the sakura weeks in April and the foliage peak in late November.

Book Takayama and the foliage-region ryokan first; they're the two that actually sell out. Reserve shinkansen seats as soon as your dates are fixed if you're travelling over the 12 October weekend. Everything else in October has more slack than people expect.
The rooms that disappear first are the ones you can't book yourself — small ryokan in Takayama, Sounkyo and the Oirase area, most of which don't list on international platforms.
