Japan Tours in April: Custom Sakura Trips Across Japan

April is Japan's most competitive spring travel month. Sakura conditions can change quickly, popular hotels fill up early, and the best viewing areas shift from Tokyo and Kyoto to Mt. Fuji, the Japanese Alps, Tohoku, and Hokkaido as the month progresses. Check out our guide to planning a trip to Japan in April.

Is April a Good Time to Visit Japan?

Yes. April is one of the most popular months to visit Japan, and the price and crowd levels reflect that. But "April" covers four very different trips depending on which week you arrive, so the useful question isn't whether to go in April. It's which April you're booking.

Early April (Apr 1–7): Classic sakura season

What to expect: Full or near-full cherry blossoms are common in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nagoya around this period in a typical year, although exact timing shifts with the weather. It is also one of the busiest and most expensive periods of the Japanese spring travel calendar. Popular hotels in central Kyoto can sell out far ahead, and major sites like Kiyomizu-dera and Arashiyama can become extremely crowded from mid-morning onward.

Book this window if: Seeing sakura in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka is a major priority and you're comfortable planning early for one of the busiest periods of spring.

Avoid it if: Crowds diminish your enjoyment, or your budget is a primary constraint.

Mid April (Apr 8–15): Follow spring beyond the big cities

What to expect: Sakura begins shifting toward higher elevations and cooler regions, including Mt. Yoshino, the Fuji Five Lakes, Takayama, and Nagano. Depending on the year, some late-blooming varieties may also remain in the major cities. Weather is warming and generally pleasant, while rates can soften after the early-April peak.

Book this window if: You want comfortable spring weather and are happy to look beyond central Tokyo and Kyoto for sakura. It is also a strong period for combining blossoms with mountain scenery and cultural experiences.

Late April (Apr 16–23): Tohoku's turn

What to expect: Sakura travel increasingly shifts north. Northern Tohoku often becomes the focus of sakura travel, with places such as Hirosaki and Kakunodate approaching or entering their main bloom period depending on the year. Elsewhere, late-blooming yaezakura, wisteria, and the shibazakura fields near Mount Fuji come into season. Weather in the main cities is often at its most comfortable.

Book this window if: You want spring Japan after the main Tokyo-Kyoto sakura period and you're open to traveling north or adding other spring flowers to the trip.

End of April (Apr 24–30): Northern bloom & Golden Week

What to expect: Cherry blossoms may begin appearing in southern Hokkaido around Hakodate and Matsumae, while Sapporo typically follows around late April to early May. Japan's Golden Week holiday period also begins around April 29, and domestic travel increases sharply: popular trains fill faster, hotel rates rise, and major destinations become busier. See the Golden Week section below for how to handle it.

Book this window if: You're chasing northern bloom and you plan around Golden Week deliberately rather than discovering it on arrival.

Weather in Japan in April

April brings proper spring weather to much of Japan, but conditions still vary significantly by region.

DestinationAvg. HighAvg. LowWhat to Expect
Tokyo19°C / 67°F10°C / 50°FMild afternoons, cooler mornings
Kyoto20°C / 68°F9°C / 48°FPleasant days, cool evenings
Osaka20°C / 68°F11°C / 52°FMild and increasingly warm
Hiroshima / FukuokaAround 20°C / 68°FAround 11°C / 52°FComfortable spring weather
TohokuAround 13–16°C / 55–61°FAround 4–7°C / 39–45°FNoticeably cooler
SapporoAround 12°C / 54°FAround 3°C / 37°FCool spring with lingering winter conditions

These are monthly averages. Early April is usually cooler, while late April can feel noticeably warmer.

What April Weather Really Feels Like

  • Temperatures change through the day. A warm afternoon can turn cool quickly after sunset, especially during evening blossom viewing.

  • Spring rain is normal. Bring a compact umbrella or light rain jacket. Wind and rain can also shorten the viewing period once cherry trees reach full bloom.

  • North and south can feel like different seasons. A route combining Tokyo, Tohoku, and Hokkaido requires more clothing flexibility than a standard Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka trip.

What to Wear in Japan in April

The governing principle is layers you can remove, because you'll be moving between cool mornings, warm afternoons, heated interiors, and cooler temple halls throughout the day.

The core kit:

  • Light or medium-weight jacket

  • Long-sleeve tops

  • Light sweater or cardigan

  • Jeans, trousers, or comfortable travel pants

  • Compact umbrella or rain shell

  • Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes

Sightseeing days can involve a lot of walking through train stations, gardens, temples, and historic districts, so good footwear matters more than bringing formal shoes.

Additions by itinerary:

  • Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka: Light jacket with removable layers.

  • Tohoku: Warmer jacket and an extra layer, especially early in April.

  • Hokkaido: Insulated jacket, warm layers, and weather-resistant footwear.

  • Takayama, Hakone & Fuji Area: Bring one warmer layer for mornings and evenings.

  • Evening hanami or illuminations: A scarf or light extra layer can make nighttime blossom viewing much more comfortable.

  • Allergy note: Cedar and cypress pollen can still be high in April. Travelers with seasonal allergies should bring their usual medication.

Cherry Blossoms in Japan in April

April is one of the best months for seeing cherry blossoms, but the location matters just as much as the date.

Japan's sakura season moves gradually from warmer regions toward cooler and higher areas. That means travelers arriving after Tokyo's flowers have fallen can often find blossoms elsewhere.

Typical April Sakura Timing

Cherry trees usually move from first bloom to full bloom over several days, followed by a relatively short peak viewing period. Warm weather can accelerate flowering, while colder conditions may delay it. Wind and rain can also shorten the season once trees are fully open.

For that reason, treat bloom dates as seasonal guidance rather than guarantees.

  • Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka: Late March to early April is usually the main season.

  • Kanazawa: Often around early April.

  • Mount Yoshino: Early to mid-April, with different elevations blooming at different times.

  • Fuji Five Lakes: Often around mid-April.

  • Takayama & Nagano: Generally early to mid-April.

  • Southern Tohoku: Early to mid-April.

  • Northern Tohoku: Mid to late April.

  • Southern Hokkaido: Late April into early May.

  • Sapporo: Usually late April to early May.

As the season approaches, cherry blossom forecasts and local bloom reports become much more useful. We use the latest available information when planning a private Sakura trip.

What If You Arrive After the Main Sakura Season?

April still offers several excellent alternatives.

  • Yaezakura: Late-blooming double cherry blossoms often appear after Somei Yoshino.

  • Wisteria: Begins becoming a highlight from late April, particularly at Ashikaga Flower Park.

  • Shibazakura: Pink moss phlox creates colorful fields around the Mount Fuji area from mid-April onward.

  • Nemophila: Hitachi Seaside Park's blue hills become one of Japan's standout late-April landscapes.

Try Hanami Like a Local

Hanami simply means spending time beneath the cherry blossoms, often with seasonal food, snacks, or a picnic.

Department store food halls and convenience stores make it easy to pick up seasonal bento and sweets.

At night, selected parks, temples, castles, and riversides offer yozakura, illuminated cherry blossom viewing with a very different atmosphere from daytime sightseeing.

Best Places to Visit in Japan in April

For classic first-time sakura (early April):

  • Tokyo: Meguro River's canal-side blossoms, Chidorigafuchi by rowboat, and Shinjuku Gyoen with its wide variety of cherry trees

  • Kyoto: the Philosopher's Path, Maruyama Park after dark, Arashiyama, and the Keage Incline

  • Osaka: Osaka Castle Park and the Japan Mint's cherry blossom passage, which opens for a limited period each spring

For sakura with fewer people (mid-April):

  • Mount Yoshino, Nara: Japan's most celebrated sakura mountain, with a longer bloom window thanks to its different elevations

  • Fuji Five Lakes: Chureito Pagoda with Mount Fuji behind it, one of Japan's most iconic spring views

  • Takayama: preserved Edo-period streets, mountain scenery, and the Spring Festival on April 14–15

  • Nagano: cooler temperatures can bring blossoms later than Tokyo and Kyoto

For late-April travel:

  • Hirosaki, Aomori: one of Japan's best-known late-season sakura destinations, with castle grounds and petal-filled moats

  • Kakunodate, Akita: weeping cherries along a preserved samurai district

  • Ashikaga Flower Park: famous wisteria from mid-to-late April into May

  • Hitachi Seaside Park: nemophila hills become a major highlight in late April

  • Hakodate, Hokkaido: sakura can begin toward the end of the month, with Goryokaku among the best-known viewing spots

Best Things to Do in Japan in April

April offers much more than cherry blossom viewing.

  • See Sakura by Day and Night

Visit parks, riversides, castles, and temple gardens during the day, then experience illuminated yozakura after dark.

  • Ride Beneath the Blossoms

Rent a rowboat at Chidorigafuchi in Tokyo or enjoy castle-moat scenery in destinations such as Hirosaki during bloom.

  • Experience the Takayama Spring Festival

Held on April 14–15, the festival features ornate floats, traditional performances, and evening lantern displays.

  • See the Miyako Odori in Kyoto

April is the traditional season for Gion's famous dance performances featuring geiko and maiko.

  • Travel the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

The Alpine Route typically reopens around mid-April, giving travelers access to dramatic mountain landscapes and towering snow walls.

  • Enjoy Spring Onsen

Cool mornings and evenings still make April an excellent time for outdoor hot springs in Hakone, Kinosaki, and mountain ryokan towns.

  • Watch Japanese Baseball

Japan's professional baseball season begins in spring. A game in Tokyo, Osaka, or another major city can add a very different local experience to the itinerary.

  • Try Seasonal Spring Food

April brings bamboo shoots, seasonal seafood, sakura sweets, fresh vegetables, and the first teas of the new harvest season.

One of Japan's best-known traditional festivals, with elaborate floats, performances, and evening lantern processions.

Gion's annual spring dance performances featuring geiko and maiko.

Kanamara Matsuri (Kawasaki | April 4)

One of Japan's more unusual traditional festivals and an internationally known local event.

Golden Week in Japan

Golden Week is a cluster of Japanese national holidays beginning around April 29 and continuing into early May.

In 2027, the main national holidays include:

  • April 29: Shōwa Day

  • May 3: Constitution Memorial Day

  • May 4: Greenery Day

  • May 5: Children's Day

This is one of Japan's busiest domestic travel periods.

What Travelers Should Expect

  • Heavier demand for Shinkansen reservations

  • Higher hotel rates in popular destinations

  • Busier attractions and sightseeing areas

  • Strong demand for onsen towns and resorts

How to Plan Around Golden Week

If your dates are flexible, finishing your trip before April 29 avoids the main holiday travel surge.

If you are traveling during Golden Week, reduce unnecessary city changes, reserve long-distance transport early, and start popular sightseeing days earlier in the morning.

Private itineraries can also be adjusted to reduce avoidable transfers during the busiest dates.

What to Eat in Japan in April

April menus reflect Japan's shift into spring.

  • Takenoko: Fresh bamboo shoots served grilled, simmered, or with rice.

  • Nanohana: Slightly bitter spring greens often served with mustard dressing.

  • Hotaru Ika: Firefly squid, especially associated with Toyama during spring.

  • Hatsu-gatsuo: The season's first bonito, often served lightly seared.

  • Sakura Ebi: Tiny pink shrimp associated with Suruga Bay.

  • Sakura Mochi: A traditional pink rice sweet wrapped in a salted cherry leaf.

  • Shincha: Japan's first green tea harvest begins appearing toward late April in warmer tea-producing regions.

And during sakura season, one of the simplest experiences is also one of the best: pick up a seasonal hanami bento and enjoy it beneath the blossoms.

Japan Itinerary in April

Three routes that match the month's realities rather than fighting them.

10 days, early April — Classic Golden Route

Tokyo (3 days) → Hakone (1 day) → Kyoto (3 days) → Nara day trip → Osaka (2 days)

The standard first-timer route works especially well in early April because the main sakura season often overlaps with several stops along the Golden Route. Exact bloom conditions vary by city and year, so the itinerary should remain flexible enough to prioritize the best seasonal spots available during your dates.

Book accommodation well ahead, especially in Kyoto and Tokyo, and plan the most popular sights for early morning where possible. Evening illuminations are also worth building into the route.

12 days, mid-April — Chasing the bloom inland

Tokyo (3 days) → Fuji Five Lakes (1 day) → Takayama (2 days) → Kanazawa (2 days) → Kyoto (3 days) → Nara / Mount Yoshino day trip

A strong itinerary for mid-April travelers. As the main city bloom fades, the route moves toward higher elevations and cooler destinations while combining seasonal scenery with cultural stops.

Takayama's Spring Festival falls on April 14–15, while Mount Yoshino's staggered hillside bloom can extend the sakura window beyond the main Tokyo-Kyoto season.

12 days, late April to early May — North to the blossoms

Tokyo (2 days) → Sendai (1 day) → Hirosaki (2 days) → Kakunodate (1 day) → Hakodate (2 days) → Sapporo (2 days)

For travelers whose dates fall beyond the classic Tokyo-Kyoto bloom window. Sakura moves through Tohoku in April and reaches southern Hokkaido later in the month, while Sapporo typically follows around late April to early May.

If your dates extend beyond April 29, plan rail and hotel reservations with Golden Week demand in mind.
