Sumo wrestling can date back ovr 1500 years and it is a tradional Japanese sport. In this sport, two wrestles, or "rikishi" face off in a circular ring called a "dohyo". The objective of the game is to either force your opponent out of the ring or make them touch the ground with any part of their body other than the soles of their feet.
Before eah match, the wrestles engage in a series of rituals to purify themselves and pay homage to the gods. During the rituals,people throw salt into the ring to purify it and performing a dance called the "shiko" to show respect for the sport and its tradition.
Sumo wrestling is highly respected in Japan, and matches can draw huge crowds. The tournaments take place six times a year, each lasting for 15 days. The biggest tournament-Grand Sumo Tournament takes place in Tokyo three times a year in January, May and September.
