Why Hokkaido Should Be on Your First Japan Trip
Compared to Japan's more popular destinations like bustling Tokyo or culturally rich Kyoto, Hokkaido offers a refreshing contrast - a vast, nature-packed paradise where the air feels cleaner, the pace slower, and the crowds far fewer. While the main island of Honshu dazzles with temples, shopping, and city lights, Hokkaido invites travelers to experience Japan's wild, untamed beauty in its purest form.
You can fly directly into New Chitose Airport from Tokyo or other major cities. If you're already in Japan, the scenic Hokkaido Shinkansen is also a great option to reach the island, offering a relaxing journey with beautiful views.
Hokkaido is the perfect choice for first-time visitors who want to go beyond the typical tourist route and dive into Japan's more open, scenic, and soulful side.
Less hectic, more spacious, and rich in authentic local experiences, it's where you can truly breathe in Japan for the first time, at your own pace.

FAQs: Planning Your First Trip to Hokkaido
1. The Best of Hokkaido Through the Seasons
Wondering when to plan your first trip to Hokkaido, Japan? The best time to visit Hokkaido for first-timers depends on what kind of experience you seek - blossoms, breezes, blazing colors, or snow blankets. Each season in Hokkaido offers something uniquely beautiful and far less crowded than the mainland's popular tourist hubs.

Spring (Late April - May): Quiet Cherry Blossom Season
While Tokyo and Kyoto see cherry blossoms peak in late March or early April, Hokkaido's sakura season begins later, from late April into early May, making it a perfect option for travellers who want to enjoy the magic of Japan's cherry blossoms without the crowds. Spots like Goryokaku Park in Hakodate and Matsumae Castle turn into pink wonderlands, set against still-snowcapped mountains and clear skies. It's the perfect mix of natural tranquility and floral beauty - a true hidden gem for spring.

The Hokkaido Cherry Blossom Tour is a 6-day tour package from UME Travel that we recommend to you.

Summer (June - August): Cool Escapes and Colorful Landscapes
While much of Japan swelters in hot, humid weather, Hokkaido stays pleasantly cool and breezy, making it ideal for outdoor adventures and scenic drives. During this time, fields bloom in stunning hues - the purple lavender fields of Furano, sunflower farms, and rolling green hills of Biei draw photographers and nature lovers alike. Summer is also festival season, with local matsuri featuring fireworks, dancing, and street food. Popular things to do in Hokkaido in summer include:
Flower viewing at Farm Tomita. Enjoying fresh melon, corn, and dairy treats.
See the mirror-clear The Blue(Aoike) Pond, a 30-minute drive from Tomita Farm.
Close encounters with marine and land animals at Asahikawa Zoo.

Autumn (September - November): Foliage and Flavors
Autumn paints Hokkaido in shades of crimson and gold. Unlike Kyoto, where temples and shrines frame the fall scenery, Sapporo's autumn celebrates wild nature - fiery maples and golden ginkgo trees blazing across mountain valleys and forested gorges. Hokkaido is where Japan's fall begins - head to the mountains in late September to witness the country's earliest autumn colors.
Don't miss these seasonal highlights:
Scenic drives through the flaming slopes of Jozankei Gorge
Strolling through Sapporo's Odori Park, where maple-lined paths glow at sunset
Admiring the golden ginkgo boulevard at Hokkaido University
Visiting farms and local harvest festivals bursting with pumpkins, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, and salmon roe
Winding down in a cozy ryokan with steaming onsen baths and seasonal kaiseki meals

Winter (December - February): A Snowy Wonderland
Hokkaido shines in winter, transforming into a white kingdom of snow and light. World-famous events like the Sapporo Snow Festival (early February) feature massive ice sculptures and glowing installations. It's also Japan's ski and snowboard capital - Niseko, Furano, and Rusutsu offer powdery slopes for all levels. Off the slopes, nothing beats a dip in an outdoor hot spring while snow falls around you. Top things to do in Hokkaido in winter include:
Skiing or snowboarding in world-class resorts
Exploring ice villages and snow festivals
Onsen bathing in places like Noboribetsu and Jozankei
Enjoying Hokkaido crab, hotpot, and sake

2. Top Destinations in Hokkaido for First-Time Visitors
With its expansive open landscapes and well-connected cities, Hokkaido offers an incredible variety of destinations for first-time travelers, whether you're chasing snow, flowers, food, or culture. From charming port towns to dynamic capital cities and stunning natural escapes, here are some of the best places to visit in Hokkaido for your debut trip:
1) Sapporo: Your Gateway to Hokkaido
As Hokkaido's capital and most accessible city, Sapporo is the ideal starting point for any trip. Known for the annual Snow Festival, fresh seafood markets, and laid-back city vibe, Sapporo balances urban convenience with natural beauty. Explore Odori Park, ride the Mt. Moiwa Ropeway, or enjoy a bowl of famous Sapporo miso ramen in the city's historic ramen alley.
2) Otaru: Romance by the Canal
Just an hour from Sapporo, Otaru is a picturesque port town with charm, a fairytale-like canal, gas lamps, and preserved Meiji-era buildings. Stroll along the canal, explore glass-blowing workshops, and enjoy fresh sushi by the sea. Be sure to visit the Tanaka Sake Brewery to taste local craftsmanship, and take a trip to Cape Kamui (Kamuimisaki) for breathtaking coastal views that showcase Hokkaido's natural beauty. Whether you're visiting for a half-day or an overnight trip, Otaru offers a perfect blend of romantic scenery, cultural experiences, and delicious local flavors.
3) Niseko and Furano: Two Seasons, Two Dreams
Niseko welcomes you for an unforgettable winter escape with its world-famous powder snow, top-tier ski resorts, and relaxing onsen experiences.
Travel about three scenic hours across Hokkaido, and you'll find yourself in the charming town of Furano, where summer paints the landscapes with endless lavender fields, rainbow-colored gardens, and peaceful rural beauty.
Each destination captures a different spirit of Hokkaido - one wrapped in snow, the other bathed in blooms - offering dreamlike memories every season.

4) Hakodate: Southern Charm and Night Views
In southern Hokkaido, Hakodate blends history, culture, and culinary delights. Stroll through the Motomachi district, visit Goryokaku Fortress, and take the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway for one of Japan's top three night views. Don't miss the morning seafood market where you can try live squid sashimi if you feel brave!
5) Biei & Asahikawa: Hokkaido's Heartland
Located in central Hokkaido, Biei and Asahikawa are a dream for photographers and slow travelers. Rolling patchwork hills, artistic landscapes like the Blue Pond, and gourmet delights such as Asahikawa shoyu ramen make this region peaceful and enriching.

3. What to Do in Hokkaido: Top Experiences for Beginners
While the natural beauty of Hokkaido is stunning, the local experiences truly make a first-time trip unforgettable. From soaking in a hot spring to tasting the freshest seafood, here are the top things to do in Hokkaido for beginners, whether you're a foodie, an adventure seeker, or simply someone looking to connect with nature.
1) Soak in a Traditional Onsen
One of Hokkaido's most relaxing and culturally rich experiences is visiting an onsen (hot spring). Many onsens are scattered across the island, but Noboribetsu and Jozankei are particularly famous. Imagine relaxing in hot mineral waters surrounded by snow-covered landscapes in winter or vibrant foliage in autumn - it's an experience you won't forget.
2) Try Fresh Seafood
Hokkaido is Japan's seafood capital, and it's the perfect place to sample fresh crab (kani), sea urchin (uni), and the finest sashimi. Hakodate's morning market is one of the best spots to try seafood directly from the source. Alternatively, Otaru offers sushi with fish caught just hours before, giving you an authentic taste of the region.

3) Experience a Local Festival
Hokkaido is home to some of Japan's most iconic festivals. The Sapporo Snow Festival (held every February) showcases giant snow sculptures and ice displays, while the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival turns the canal city into a magical winter wonderland. If visiting in summer, check out the lively Yosakoi Soran Festival for traditional dance and street performances.
4) Ride Scenic Trains or Go Self-Drive
To immerse yourself in Hokkaido's vast landscapes, hop aboard a scenic train like the Joyful Train or take a self-driving tour through Biei or Furano. Both options offer a relaxed pace, with breathtaking views of flowers, mountains, and the occasional wildlife. For first-timers, self-driving allows you to explore off-the-beaten-path spots at your own pace.
5) Go Fruit Picking or Cheese Tasting
If you're visiting in late spring or summer, Hokkaido's lush farmland is ideal for fruit picking - strawberries, cherries, and melons are just a few delights available. Afterwards, head to Furano for a cheese tasting session at one of the many local farms, where you can sample everything from soft cheeses to decadent milk-based desserts.

Transportation: How to Get Around Hokkaido
UME Travel provides private car and personal guide services, ensuring a worry-free journey across Hokkaido's vast landscapes.
You'll need to rely on JR Passes, local trains, or car rentals to explore more remote areas without a private service.
Accommodations: Where You'll Stay
UME Travel handpicks cozy and well-located stays for you, blending comfort with authentic experience:
HOTEL MYSTAYS Premier Sapporo Park (Sapporo city center, easy access to highlights)

Weather: What to Pack by Season
Spring (April–May): Light jacket, layers, umbrella.
Summer (June–August): Light clothing, sunscreen, hat.
Autumn (September–November): Sweaters, light coat for cool evenings.
Winter (December–March): Heavy coat, thermal layers, waterproof boots, gloves, and warm hats.
Winter Travel Tips: How to Enjoy Bad Weather
Winter skies may turn gray, but you can still embrace Hokkaido's charm!
Opt for cozy indoor experiences like hot spring baths, museum visits, or gourmet seafood feasts.
Adjust outdoor sightseeing to shorter, focused trips between warm-up breaks at cafés or shops.
Private cars with professional drivers can make winter travel far safer and more comfortable.
Winter Roads: Is It Slippery? What Shoes Should I Wear?
Yes, icy roads and sidewalks are familiar! Your winter shoes should meet three key criteria:
→ Waterproof
→ Anti-slip sole
→ Warm insulation
Forgot to pack anti-slip gear? No worries - FamilyMart and Lawson convenience stores in Sapporo sell handy, removable anti-slip pads.
Language: Can I get by using English?
English is available in major tourist areas and hotels. However, in more rural regions, English may be limited. Basic Japanese phrases (like "Thank you" - Arigatou, "Excuse me" - Sumimasen) go a long way and are always appreciated!
Payment and SIM Cards
Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, but carrying some cash (yen) for small shops or rural areas is wise. SIM cards and pocket Wi-Fi devices are easily rented at New Chitose Airport (CTS) or downtown Sapporo. You'll want good data access to navigate, translate, and share those snowy memories!

Memorable Momiji Moments in Hokkaido & Tokyo
Thanks to Amber for crafting an amazing itinerary tailored to our autumn foliage wishes! We were treated to incredible scenes at Hokkaido's Shikotsu-Toya National Park and Jozankei, with the perfect duo of our wonderful guide, Owen, and skilful driver, Sakayi-san. They kept us well-informed on the sights and even pointed us to delicious Hokkaido ice cream and creamy milk soups! Although we were just a tad early for peak foliage in Tokyo - and Nikko was buzzing with Sunday and holiday crowds— our experienced driver Kiran-san, did bring us to Hakone's star attraction! We were blessed with clear skies and the grand appearance by Mt. Fuji at Lake Ashinoko, framed beautifully by the Torii gate. What a trip!
- Clarice W, Singapore
Smooth organization and enchanting locations make a memorable trip
Steven and Greg of UME organized for two OI us a 21-day trip to Japan and Korea. In the process of developing the itinerary they were very attentive to our wishes, provided a plenty of input and alternatives, and always reacted promptly to our comments. Our final itinerary included multiple locations in south-west Honshu, Hokkaido and Seoul, multiple flights, trains, and private car. We were met and guided by five different guides, all knowledgeable, English speaking and considerate professionals. We knew our schedule in advance. Guides and drivers were always on time, and catered to our needs. In summary, thanks to UME staff, this long trip was very enjoyable and effortless for a couple of seasoned travelers in their seventies.

7. FAQs: Planning Your First Trip to Hokkaido
When should I book my trip?
Hokkaido gets busy during peak seasons, and things like private cars and hotels can fill up quickly. We suggest booking at least three to six months ahead to get your perfect trip locked in. The earlier you plan with UME Travel, the more options you'll have - and the less you'll have to worry about!
Is Hokkaido a good place for families and seniors?
It's fantastic for both! Hokkaido is welcoming all year round, and with UME Travel's private car service, getting around is easy and comfortable for families with kids or senior travelers. Just a heads-up: the sidewalks can get slippery if you're visiting in winter. Handy anti-slip shoe covers are sold at local convenience stores like Lawson and FamilyMart, which are easy to pick up if needed!
Is it easy to find good food in Hokkaido?
It's super easy - and everything's delicious! From fresh seafood bowls in Hakodate to piping-hot bowls of miso ramen in Sapporo, Hokkaido is a foodie's paradise. Plus, we can recommend places or even help you arrange reservations if you have dietary needs or preferences.

It depends on where you're from. Travelers from places like the U.S., Canada, Australia, and much of Europe usually don't need a visa for short visits (up to 90 days). Can UME Travel help with special requests, like birthdays or anniversaries?
Absolutely! We love making special moments even more memorable. Whether it's a birthday surprise, a romantic anniversary dinner, or something extra, just let us know - we'll help make it happen.
What We'd Like to Say
Hokkaido is where first journeys feel effortless, and every moment feels magical.
In spring, cherry blossoms quietly unfurl along rivers and parks, far from the busy crowds. You wander under soft pink skies, with the crisp northern air brushing your cheeks.
In summer, lavender fields roll out like purple carpets across Furano. The hills of Biei burst into color, and you pause to savor a scoop of rich, creamy ice cream - a little taste of sunshine in every bite.
Come autumn, the island turns golden and red. Ginkgo trees line peaceful streets, and maple forests light up the hills like fire, inviting slow, thoughtful walks.
Then, winter arrives. Powdery snow falls like whispers, the world turns silent and white. You sink into steaming outdoor onsen, ski across glittering slopes, and gather around tables filled with Hokkaido's freshest seafood.
Every season in Hokkaido is a new story, waiting just for you. With wide-open spaces, welcoming locals, and the gentle pace of life here, it's a perfect place for first-time travelers - and unforgettable adventures. Let UME Travel make it even easier: with private guides, comfortable transportation, and fully customized itineraries designed just for you.
