A Short But Unforgettable Journey Through China’s Contrasts
A group of friends spent 5 days traveling through Beijing and Shanghai, carefully planning their journey in collaboration with UME Travel designer Dan Li, who helped shape an itinerary that balanced cultural landmarks, iconic sightseeing, and relaxed group experiences.
From the beginning, the trip was designed around shared interests and travel pace, ensuring the group could enjoy both cities comfortably without feeling rushed.
What made this journey special was the contrast between destinations — from Beijing’s deep historical heritage to Shanghai’s modern cultural energy — experienced together through a smooth and well-paced travel flow.

Beijing – History, Scale & Cultural Landmarks
The journey began in Beijing, where history and national heritage shaped the entire atmosphere.
At Tiananmen Square, the group experienced the vast scale of one of the world’s most symbolic public spaces before stepping into the Forbidden City, where ancient architecture and imperial design revealed centuries of history in every courtyard and corridor.
A visit to the Badaling section of the Great Wall became one of the most memorable moments of the trip. Walking along the mountain ridges, the panoramic views created a powerful sense of scale and connection to China’s ancient past.
Later, the Olympic landmarks — Bird’s Nest and Water Cube — added a modern contrast to Beijing’s historical identity, showing a different side of the city’s development.
Throughout the Beijing days, the journey maintained a smooth rhythm, allowing the group to fully enjoy each landmark without feeling rushed.
Shanghai – Tradition, Style & Modern Energy
Arriving in Shanghai, the atmosphere shifted completely.
At Yu Garden, the group experienced a Hanfu cultural dress-up session, moving through classical Chinese architecture while dressed in traditional attire — a playful and visually rich cultural moment that connected past and present in a unique way.
In Zhujiajiao Water Town, stone bridges, slow-moving canals, and quiet alleyways created a softer rhythm compared to the city’s fast-paced energy. Walking and boat rides through the water town added a sense of calm and reflection to the journey.
Shanghai itself offered a different kind of beauty — one defined by contrast, creativity, and lifestyle energy.
A Journey Defined by Contrast & Connection
Across 5 days, this friends’ journey brought together two completely different sides of China — the historical depth of Beijing and the modern cultural atmosphere of Shanghai.
Each destination offered its own rhythm, yet the experience remained cohesive through shared moments, easy pacing, and meaningful exploration together.
Beyond the landmarks and scenery, what defined the trip most was the experience of traveling as a group — sharing meals, laughter, and countless spontaneous photo moments along the way.
This was not just a short city tour.
It was a private journey designed around connection, discovery, and experiencing China’s contrasts in a single shared memory.
