Introduction

David Park had been to Japan once for work. His wife had never been. Their two daughters, fourteen and eight, had built very different ideas of the country from the same set of YouTube videos. The older daughter wanted Harajuku, Shibuya Sky, Akihabara, and DisneySea. The younger one wanted animals, trains, and anything she could eat with her hands. Both of them had produced lists, and neither list left much room for compromise.

The family is based in Seattle. They had two weeks over the summer break, which was enough time to cover Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Okinawa, but not enough to do everything on either list. The main question was not which places to include. It was how to keep an eight-year-old moving and a fourteen-year-old interested on the same day.

Planning the Journey

The younger daughter was a hesitant eater, and the older one wanted to try everything.

Dan split the itinerary into single-day blocks. Each day carried one thing for the older daughter, one thing for the younger, and one slower moment for the parents. He booked DisneySea tickets in advance, reserved the wagashi-making class in Kyoto, and arranged luggage forwarding between hotels so the family never had to drag suitcases onto a Shinkansen. He also kept two mornings deliberately open, one in Tokyo and one in Okinawa.

Destination Experience

Tokyo was divided into three days. The first morning went to Meiji Shrine and Harajuku, which satisfied the older daughter's interest in street fashion and gave the younger one space to walk. The afternoon moved to Shibuya Sky and the Disney Store in Shibuya, then an early dinner. DisneySea took a full day, with the older daughter choosing the ride order and the younger one spending an hour at the Mermaid Lagoon. The third day was slower: Sensoji Temple in the morning, the capybara cafe in the afternoon, and a walk through Akihabara before dinner.

The Mt. Fuji area broke up the Tokyo-to-Kyoto transfer. They took the Shinkansen to Mishima, then a private car to Lake Kawaguchiko. The sightseeing boat gave the younger daughter a rest from walking, and Arakurayama Sengen Shrine gave the older one the photograph she wanted. They stayed one night at a hotel with an onsen, which was the parents' main request for that section. The older daughter tried the bath once and spent the rest of the evening in the hotel game room. The younger daughter stayed in the water until her fingers wrinkled.

Kyoto was where the schedule had to work hardest. The first day covered Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka, and Ninenzaka in the morning, then the Sagano Bamboo Forest and Tenryu-ji in the afternoon. The second day was the wagashi-making class, followed by a walk through Nishiki Market. The third day went to Nara, where the deer at Nara Park replaced any formal sightseeing for the younger daughter. She spent forty minutes feeding them and refused to leave until they had run out of crackers.

The difficulty appeared on the fourth Kyoto day. The plan had included Fushimi Inari and two more temples, but the younger daughter sat down on a bench at Yasaka Shrine and said she did not want to walk to another temple. Dan had already flagged this possibility, so the guide switched the afternoon to the Kyoto Railway Museum, which the younger daughter had not known was an option. The older daughter used the extra time to walk part of Fushimi Inari on her own with her mother.

Osaka was shorter. They visited Osaka Castle in the morning, spent an hour at the Museum of History, and went to Kuromon Market for lunch. The afternoon was Dotonbori, the HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel, and dinner on the street. The older daughter wanted to stay later; the younger one was asleep in the stroller by eight.

Okinawa ended the trip with three nights. Churaumi Aquarium took the first day. The second day was Kouri Island and a short visit to American Village. The third morning was left open, which the family spent at the hotel pool. They flew back to Tokyo the next afternoon.

Travel Result

The two weeks covered what each of them had wanted most. The older daughter got Harajuku, DisneySea, Akihabara, and Fushimi Inari. The younger daughter got the capybara cafe, the Nara deer, the railway museum, and the Okinawa pool. The parents got the onsen, the temples, and the market walks.

The day that stood out afterward was the wagashi-making class. The whole family worked on the same sweets, the eight-year-old ate most of the samples, and the fourteen-year-old said the result was better than she had expected. That was the moment David's wife said she would keep.
