Why they went
Mark and his wife live in Boulder, Colorado, where most weekends end up on a trail with the kids. When they started planning a ten-day summer trip to Japan, they wanted more than cities. Mark had passed through Osaka on a work trip years earlier and wanted to come back properly, this time with the whole family.
The two boys had their own list. The older one had been reading Detective Conan for years and wanted to see the places connected to the series. Both wanted the anime side of Tokyo. And then there was their daughter, 20 months old at the time, who would be riding in a hiking carrier for part of the trip. The family needed an itinerary that could hold three things at once: big-city days, mountain scenery, and real walking in the countryside.

Planning the trip
Mark contacted UME Travel about eight months before departure and worked with consultant Grace on the route. The framework came together quickly: four nights in Tokyo, two at Lake Kawaguchiko near Mt. Fuji, two days walking a section of the Kumano Kodo with an overnight on the trail, then two nights in Osaka.
Ghibli Museum tickets were the first practical problem. The museum releases tickets on the 10th of each month for the following month, and the good time slots are usually gone within the hour. Grace booked the family's tickets the morning the window opened, which saved Mark from refreshing a Japanese ticketing site at two in the morning his time.
The Kumano Kodo needed more thought because of the toddler. Grace planned two stages of the Nakahechi route with a local guide, booked family-run guesthouses for the overnight, and arranged luggage forwarding so the large bags moved by courier while Mark and his wife carried day packs and the child carrier. She also placed the inter-city drives with private drivers so nobody had to work out rush-hour train platforms with a stroller and four bags.

Destination Experience
Tokyo
The family gave Tokyo four nights. On the first morning they walked through Meiji Jingu before the crowds arrived, then spent the rest of the day around Harajuku and Omotesando, which the boys rated as the best people-watching of the trip. Another day covered Senso-ji in Asakusa and a long breakfast at Tsukiji Outer Market, where the toddler discovered tamagoyaki and refused to share.
TeamLab Borderless was the rainy-day pick and turned out to be a good one; the kids could move between rooms at their own pace while the adults caught up. The Ghibli Museum was the day the whole family had been waiting for. The boys grew up on the films, and the short film that screens only at the museum made the ticket scramble worth it on its own.
Around Mt. Fuji
From Tokyo the family rode with a private driver to Lake Kawaguchiko for two nights. They took the sightseeing boat across the lake, visited the Yamanashi Prefectural Fuji Mountain World Heritage Center, and stopped at Sengen Shrine at the foot of the mountain.
The clear morning came on day seven, when their driver took them up the Fuji Subaru Line to the 5th Station. They had lunch near the trailhead, took the usual photo at the stone marker by the parking area, and watched the summit appear and disappear behind clouds, which is apparently the standard Mt. Fuji experience. The boys walked the short nature loop while the toddler slept through all of it in the carrier.
Two days on the Kumano Kodo
The hike was the part Mark had pushed for, and the part Grace had spent the most time on. The original plan had the family walking a longer stage on day two, but after she checked the elevation profile against the toddler's nap schedule, Grace shortened it and added a short taxi transfer over the steepest stretch. That one change meant the family finished the day by mid-afternoon instead of carrying a sleeping toddler through the last kilometers.
They started from Takijiri with their guide and climbed through forest onto the stone-paved ridge sections the Kumano Kodo is known for. The boys took turns leading. Dinner at the guesthouse was an unexpected hit: grilled fish, mountain vegetables, and rice, served early enough for the toddler to sit at the table.
Day two ended at Nachi Falls, where the trail drops toward the tallest waterfall in Japan. The family photo there, everyone sweaty, the toddler on Mark's back, the UME Travel sign held out in front, is the one that gets shown around most.
Osaka
Osaka closed the trip with two nights. The family climbed Osaka Castle, grazed through Kuromon Market, and spent an evening in Dotonbori, where the older boy finally got his Detective Conan time at the themed spots he had researched back home. For Mark's wife, Kuromon Market was the best food day of the trip.
How it went
Ten days, four bases, one toddler, and no missed connections. The parts the family kept mentioning afterward were the ones that had worried them during planning: both hiking days went as scheduled, the forwarded luggage always arrived before they did, and the private transfers between cities meant nobody had to figure out train connections with a stroller. The boys ranked the hike above Tokyo. The toddler slept through most of Mt. Fuji and all of the best parts of the trail.
The family is already talking about a return trip to walk the Nakasendo, and this time Grace has a head start on the planning.
