I personally would have found it very difficult to have explored china without our guide - simply because of the language barrier and sheer size of the cities. Our guide spoke perfect English & was very knowledgeable about the places we visited. she also gave us great insight into the Chinese culture and way of life.
A walk along the top of the City Wall is absolutely not to be missed. The ancient wall has been beautifully restored and very effectively lighted. It a very popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike, with beautiful views, places to eat and drink, and interesting things to see and do. As westerners, we had not heard of this, and are so glad to have had the chance to walk along this ancient way.
We loved strolling around the park last weekend and enjoyed the lights shining all around. This is a great place to people watch and just look around at the city skyline beauty! We also enjoyed or visit to the Forbidden City. The area is huge and requires a lot of walking. We had a stroller which wasn't very useful due to the uneven rocks on the floor- not a big deal for us since our boys weren't that tired, but perhaps it could affect other families more.
I thought Yuyuan will be a very convenient garden, with a lot of trees, benches or little lake to spend your time and refresh mind. This is a beautiful oasis of culture in modern Shanghai. Actually it more seems like a market or shopping centre. But, the accents of Chinese ancient buildings in every shops really made it worth, made me feel like I was living in Ming Dynasty's market.
I did the one day tour of Suzhou and Tongli. My guide and the driver picked me up at my hotel in Shanghai and we drove to Suzhou. It was all very scenic and we had nice weather as well. The guide did a good job of explaining things and answering my questions.
