Doi Tung was once a secluded area in the heart of the Golden Triangle-a leading region of illicit world opium production. The watershed area was denuded by slash and burn cultivation, and further accelerared by opium growing. The residents were of six ethnic group without Thai citizenship. They lived in a "survival world"where people lived in abject poverty, whithout basic infrastructure or government support.Armed groups occupied parts of the area, which made it even more difficult for government officials to provide any assistance to the local residents.
After the Princess Mother's first visit to Doi Tung, She announced"I will reforest Doi Tung".the Princess Mother decided to improve the conditions of Doi Tung, socially, economically, and environmentally. She demonstrated her commitment by building her home in Doi Tung, which is what we called Mae Fah Luang Garden, giving hope to the ethnic minorities and providing opportunities for all people regardless of race, religion, or nationality.
The Garden is located on land that was originally the Akha village of Pa Kluay. At the request of the Doi Tung Development Project, the villagers agreed to be relocated to a new site 500 meters away. This site sits on a hill with expansive land. It has running water, electricity, and a paved road into the village. Back in their former settlement, a garden of temperate flowers was built over 10 acres of land in accordance with the Princess Mother's wish, to give Thai people who have never travelled overseas an opportunity to enjoy a temperate flower garden. In the middle of this garden stands "Continuity", a sculpture by the late Misiem Yip-In-Soi. The Princess Mother gave this name to the sculpture to draw attention to the fact that continuity ensures the success of any endeavour. The decorative flowers in Mae Fah Luang Garden are grown and nurtured by local villagers. The Garden brings substantial income to the area, directly as job opportunities for the locals, and indirectly as a tourist destination. In 1993, the Pacific Asia Tourism Association (PATA) named the Mae Fah Luang Garden winner of PATA Award for Tourist Site Development.
